This lush tropical garden sets the scene for our tropical holiday. Tabu is in Freshwater, nestled at the foot of Mt Whitfield. The design here is clever with mass planting of beautiful foliages and flowers. It benefits from a rainforest backdrop, sculpted as it is into the hillside.

Mossman (B/L)

An exciting story waits this morning at Botanical Ark. Alan and Susie Carle have an ambitious goal – they want to save the rainforest. So instead of simply writing a cheque, like most of us do, they are going about it with a mix of creativity, practicality and sheer hard work. Here at Botanical Ark, in the lush countryside outside Mossman in far North Queensland, the Carles grow 3000 different species of rainforest plants, more than 400 of which are edible. One of the Carle strategies is to use their love of food and their passion for new flavours to lure us into saving the rainforest by eating it. So lunch at Botanical Ark is a treat. But first there’s a tour of the garden, crammed with unusual fruits and the stunning flowers of tropical heliconias, costus and other treasures.
We are heading to Whyanbeel Arboretum this afternoon, formerly a sugar cane farm that nestles into the hills of the Upper Daintree. Peter Sargent loves living close to the wilderness. His arboretum is so much more; it’s a tropical botanic garden and flower farm. Ferns, mosses and native peppers grow along the shaded river bank. Exotic vanilla orchids grow among native vines scrambling up palms and trees. Peter’s family runs a cut-flower business, producing gingers, heliconias and palms. Many of the bromeliads and cordylines growing there have been bred by Peter and his father.
We will be ready to plunge into our swimming pool when we get back to our hotel.

Daintree Rainforest (B/L)

The Daintree is the world’s oldest rainforest (UNESCO wet tropics world heritage) and that’s our destination today into Mossman Gorge.
First we’ll take a Dreamtime Walk, conducted by the local Indigenous people. Ngadiku (Nar-di-gul) means stories and legends from a long time ago in local Kuku Yalanji language. The walk takes along private, gentle tracks, visiting special places and culturally significant sites, past traditional bark shelters and over meandering cool rainforest streams.
We are heading to Silky Oaks Lodge for lunch today, beautifully situated on the Mossman Gorge River. This is one of Australia’s premier luxury lodges with fine dining in their Treehouse Restaurant.
Brand new, very exciting, world-class, and not yet open is Mossman Botanic Garden and research station provides an arboretum for Wet Tropics World Heritage plants and other important rainforest plants. Our guide John Sullivan will explain what is planned for this Botanic Garden project.
Time to head back to our hotel fully informed about the Daintree.
