Visit the Silver Pavilion (Ginkakuji) then witness a traditional Tea Ceremony in Hakusa Sonso villa by owner and Tea Mistress, Mrs Hashimoto, in one of the largest private gardens in Kyoto and the home of the Hashimoto Art Museum. Following a walk through the garden, created in 1915, we enjoy a traditional lunch in the intimate family restaurant.

This afternoon stroll the Philosopher’s Path under a canopy of Cherry trees.

Morning visit to the Stone Garden (Ryoanji Temple) then Golden Pavilion ( Kinkakuji Temple)

After lunch, visit Gioji Temple, a small thatched roof hall surrounded by a luxuriant moss garden.  Finish the day at Arashiyama with a walk through a dense bamboo forest.

An early start at Kyoto’s eastern Higashiyama Mountains to wonder at the towering World Heritage listed Kiyomizu Temple.

Next visit UNESCO World Heritage listed Nijo Castle (Ninomaru Palace), dating from 1626 and famous for its fortress-like interior and ingenious escape routes of the Tokugawa Shogun and the Imperial Court. Walk around the Ninomaru Garden with its large ponds and majestic topiarised pine trees and the Seiryu-en Garden filled with flowering cherry trees.

Special Dinner included tonight with a Geisha Performance

Travel by train to Nagoya to see the iconic Nagoya Castle. This afternoon visit Nabana No Sato in Mie prefecture. This theme park is a new concept in world class show gardens covering many hectares with beds filled with thousands of every type of spring flower possible and huge glasshouses overflowing with tuberous begonias and more hanging baskets than you could count.

Depart Nagoya by train to Kanazawa.

This afternoon, we’ll visit Bukeyashiki or Samurai House district and the ancient home of the Nomura Family and their small but detailed garden.

Visit Kenroku-en Gardens, famous for its six essential features of true gardens. This is one of Japan’s three most famous landscapes and developed in the 1620’s by the local daimyo Lord Maeda and includes Japan’s oldest fountain operating by natural water pressure.
Included is a visit to Seisonkaku Villa, built by a samurai for his mother.

Remainder of the day is free.

Travel to Shirakawago Village nestled in a high country rural setting reminiscent of old Japan.
Visit the UNESCO heritage listed Village filled with traditional Farm houses in a museum setting called Gasshouzukuri.

This afternoon we’ll check-into our traditional Japanese Ryokan

Monday 9 April 2018
Awazu – Nikko (B/D)

Take the train from Komatsu via Kanazawa to Takasaki.
A coach will then transfer us to Nikko. We tour the interior of the Tamozawa Imperial Villa and walk around its beautiful garden. On to the 143 year old Nikko Kanaya Hotel.

Today our coach takes us to Tokyo, the capital of Japan. On the way we’ll visit Omiya Bonsai Village and Bonsai Museum.

In the afternoon arrive at the New Otani Hotel. Stroll through beautiful gardens of the hotel.

Rikugien Garden is your destination this morning, a strolling garden laid out in 1695 and restored in the 18th century. Once the residence of powerful Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, there are 88 stops around the lake, symbolic representations of classical Japanese literature. The rhythm achieved by alternating dark and bright zones, spacious and confined areas, sunlit groves and mysterious forests, produces virtually a musical effect. Azaleas and cherries finishing their spring floral displays as our holiday nears its end.

Later visit Meiji Shrine.

Farewell dinner tonight is held at the New Otani Hotel
