We’re heading to the old French whaling town of Akaroa, nestled in the crater of an ancient volcano. On the way, we’ll visit a garden offering a unique snapshot of the native plants of the Banks Peninsula. At Akaroa, we’ll have fun exploring the charming village, art and craft shops and colonial style architecture. You will be inspired and delighted by mosaics in The Giants Garden, Josie Martin’s masterpiece. It’s wonderfully whimsical and will make you smile.

We’ll take the scenic Kaikoura coast road north today but first a stroll around the gorgeous Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Lunch is included today, then we’ll continue onto Blenheim, on the Wairau Plains in the Marlborough district, our home for the next five nights. Dinner included tonight.

Glorious country gardens are opening their gates today for Rapaura Springs Garden Marlborough, celebrating 25 years. We will enjoy a surprising diversity of private gardens. From clean and clipped, to calm and contemplative to traditional and cottagey to free-spirited and creative, all with the same very high standard. There’s something for everyone! Each visit begins with an introduction from the garden owner then Michael takes us exploring, chatting about design thinking and principles, admiring planting schemes, relishing Kiwi hospitality with delicious morning and afternoon teas. Lunch today is in Kekerengu at the very special “Store” with breathtaking views, fresh local produce and a warm Kiwi welcome. Travel back to Blenheim with the evening free.

We’ll head to the waterfront in Picton today to board our Queen Charlotte Sound cruise. Experience the rhythm of life along the coves and hidden bays. Enjoy memorable views of the stunning scenery. Lunch included in Picton today before we return to Blenheim.
Dinner included tonight at a restaurant with a focus on local producers and purveyors – a real taste of Marlborough.

Garden Fete (B/D)

Blenheim is action central this morning with their ‘not-to-be-missed’ Stihl Shop Garden Fete. This is the perfect place to find all sorts of garden-related tools, books and treasures with plenty of opportunities to fill the carry-on luggage. Treat yourself to a Pimms in the Blenheim Club.
Hortensia House (French for hydrangea) is a bowerbird garden full of cerulean collections, a bubbling stream, blue ‘Monet’ bridge, blue gates and a romantic mingle of old roses. It’s full of ideas we want to borrow.

Blenheim – Christchurch (B/L/D)

We are travelling back to Christchurch passing through the Wairau Valley, Saint Arnaud in the Nelson Lakes National Park and the Golden Downs Forest to Murchison. Then through the Maruia Forest over the Lewis Pass into Hamner Springs for lunch in this lovely alpine village. Continue on through the upper reaches of the Canterbury Plains back to Christchurch. Farewell dinner included tonight.
